Nordic centers easily accessed from Summit County homes
Frisco and Breckenridge homeowners and visitors enjoy using the Nordic centers for cross country skiing and snowshoeing.
In Frisco, the log lodge offers ski rentals, lessons, a snackbar and a cozy place to relax after a busy day. The Nordic Center is on the Frisco Peninusula, backing to the Waterdance subdivision. Waterdance residents can ski from their homes to the Nordic center and use the trail system, provided they have a trail pass. The 40 km of beginning to expert ski trails are groomed daily and skiers can either use the classic or freestyle methods. An additional 13 km of snowshoe nature trails are available for snowshoers.
Next weekend, March 8th, is the Tubbs Romp to Stomp Out Breast Cancer Snowshoe race at the Nordic Center. It is an annual event and is a fundraiser for the Susan G Komen Foundation.
Summertime sees the trails used for hiking and biking. The Frisco Peninsula has been designated as a recreation area by the Town of Frisco, and there are campgrounds, a disc golf course and a skateboard park there as well. Additionally, the town has a plan for improving the recreation opportunities and will be making changes and additions to the area starting this summer.
The Breckenridge Nordic Center is just off Ski Hill Road, one mile from downtown Breck. 32 km of looped ski trails have no road crossings, and there are an additional 16 km of snowshoe trails. The trails go from Peak 8 all the way to Peak Six. (Breckenridge Ski Resort is on Peaks 7, 8, 9 and 10.)
