Summit County home owners are wishing for spring!
We are over it…
We have had enough snow. When you ski or snowboard, you can’t wait for the first snowflakes to fall, but we are done! Copper Mountain, Breckenridge and Keystone have all been closed for a month. Arapahoe Basin is the only one still open, and they have fabulous coverage and conditions. But the daffodils are trying to bloom (I know, yours bloomed months ago) and the lake is still frozen and we really need some warm temperatures and sunshine.
The Coldwell Banker Colorado Rockies real estate
magazine is going to press this week. It will be out in time for July 4th. All the photos of the Summit County homes for sale will have snow in them, because we haven’t been able to take any snow-less photographs. It will be strange to be looking at the magazine in July and have all the homes with snow. Perhaps we can put the photos in Photoshop and paint the snow green. Do you suppose we will get in trouble for lack of truth in advertising?
We usually hike on Wednesdays in May and through the summer, but we got 6 inches of snow a couple of days ago and the forecast is 2-5″ tonight and the same again tomorrow. There is no hiking in my future for a while! We have done a couple of 3 or 4 mile walks on the bike paths, but that is all we have been able to do without snow shoes so far. Even then, we have tramped through snow in places.
The lack of my ability to get outside means that I have been able to spend a little more time painting. I will be showing my work at “Meet the Artists”, a juried, outdoor art show in Breckenridge, June 28-29, 2008. My sister, Adele, will be doing it with me. She is an artist and lives in Sedona Arizona. She is a veteran of shows, but this is my first as I have only been painting for a couple of years. My oil paintings hang in two galleries in town; Arts Alive in Breckenridge, and the Wild Side Studio in Frisco. The painting I have displayed here is from a photo I took of Buffalo Mountain, looking from the Keystone area. It is a slightly different view than most people are used to seeing of Buffalo, but it is very typical of spring in Summit County, with the willows in the wetlands turning wonderful shades of red, pink and orange, and with snow on the ground and on the mountains.
I guess the good news is that we have not had any flooding, and the areas downstream from us haven’t had any issues either. With the snow levels that we had this year, a fast warmup would have caused all kinds of problems. We get a few warm days; just enough to get us used to it, and then more cold and snow again. There is still plenty of snow high up though, and it could still happen if it finally gets warm and stays that way.

Your painting of Buffalo looks great! I’m looking forward to doing the show with you in Breckenridge. I’m also looking forward to painting plein air mid-August along the Blue River. Will the snow be gone by then?
