Still May, it is early season for hiking, but we are on our third week. This time last year there was no way we could hike as even the bike paths were still snow covered. I am part of a group of hikers who get together every Wednesday, starting as early as we can and going until snow stops us. This year our first hike was May 6th. We hiked about 6 miles on the bike path from Frisco to Copper Mountain. It is easy as hikes go; relatively flat with an elevation gain of about 600′. The Ten Mile Canyon is famous for avalanches in the spring, but we were going late enough that most had already happened. We did have to climb over one that had crossed the bike path and gone into the river, and we had some snow on the path as we got closer to Copper, but it was a good day for hiking . We had quick pit stop at the Starbucks and then took the Summit Stage back to Frisco.
May 13th we checked out the lower (easier) part of the Ptarmigan Trail…..

Eagles Nest, Willowbrook and Willowbrook Highlands homeowners
have easy access to this trail as it leaves from the upper reaches of their subdiviisons. The main trailhead is at the top of Willowbrook, and from there to Willow lakes is about 5 miles. With side trips to the other Willow lakes and Salmon lake, you can extend it to just over 13 miles round trip, as we did. The Summit County Hiker, my hiking bible, shows it as a “most difficult” trail. I scoffed for the first 3 miles, as I decided that it must be rated that way because of the length of it. However, after mile 3, the trail ….

We are over it…
We have had enough snow. When you ski or snowboard, you can’t wait for the first snowflakes to fall, but we are done! Copper Mountain, Breckenridge and Keystone have all been closed for a month. Arapahoe Basin is the only one still open, and they have fabulous coverage and conditions. But the […]

Anyone living in Summit County can take advantage of the annual Doggy days event at the Silverthorne recreation center.
Once a year, before the pool is shut down for its annual cleaning and maintenance, dog owners have the opportunity to allow their dogs to swim in the pool. It has turned into quite an event, with several sessions and even a Big Air contest! This year it will be Sunday, April 27th, 2008. Water loving dogs like labs and retrievers have a ball at a time of year when they are not able to access lakes and rivers because of ice. It is so popular that you need to make a reservation by calling Christian Liles at 970-262-7380 or email cliles@silverthorne.org. Sessions are from 9am to 10:30am and 11am to 12:30 pm.
You must provide copies of current vacination certificates for Rabies, Distemper and Bordetella before the 27th or the dog will not be able to participate. Cost is $12 for one dog, $15 for two, and $17 for 3, which is the maximum per family. The Big Air contest is at 12:45pm at a cost of $6 per dog.
Those live with their dogs in condos in Silverthorne, Dillon, or anywhere else in the county, appreciate the opportunity to….
